Freelance
Lecturer & Broadcaster
After graduating with a First Class MA Hons degree in English
Literature, Colin was appointed Lecturer in Middle English
Literature at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West
Indies. Realising that ‘dry’ academia was not for him, he returned
to music, having studied piano for many years.
He worked for English National Opera and, afterwards, as Concert Manager, for
Victor Hochhauser Ltd, before changing tack and taking over as Production
Manager for the documentary film company, Amaranthos Ltd.
Colin started work in wine, in international relations, for Domaine Carras, at
Porto Carras in Greece in 1987, before joining Maggie McNie at the Greek Wine
Bureau. He and Maggie later set up their own wine consultancy, Bacchus PR Ltd..
Colin now lectures for, amongst others, SOPEXA, the Sotheby’s Institute and
Leighton House and is an experienced radio broadcaster. He has judged for the
International Wine Challenge and is a panel judge for the International Wine &
Spirit Competition. His wine interests are mainly Old World.
Colin bases his teaching of the joys of wine on the slogan ‘Thinking Drinking’,
while never forgetting that wine is a convivial pleasure, to be shared, enjoyed
and shared again and again outside of the snapshot/clinical world of
professional tasting. Laughter, information and discussion are central. His Old
World bias is firmly rooted in the marriage of wine and food, in tradition and
the testing of tradition.
