Paul’s interest
in wine was first sparked some 20 years ago on a wine-tasting holiday in
Burgundy. Since then he has travelled frequently to the world's wine regions and
regularly attends tastings in the UK.
While Burgundy
remains his first love, he regularly visits other French regions such as
Champagne, Loire, Rhône, Alsace, Bordeaux, Languedoc and Cognac. He has also
been fortunate to visit many wine regions in other European countries such as
Italy, Spain and Greece. Further afield, California and the lesser known
vineyards of New York State and Canada have all been explored. His wine
experience has therefore been gained first hand and enables him to keep up with
the latest developments and communicate a sense of place.
New Zealand’s
wineries were visited in the autumn of 2005 thanks to being awarded the
prestigious Wine Trade Club Paten Scholarship while studying for the WSET
Diploma in Wines and Spirits, which he passed at Honours level.
A particular
specialist subject is Biodynamics, a fascinating and environmentally-friendly
agricultural philosophy which is gaining ground among many of the world’s top
wine producers. He is also a member of Slow Food, the international organisation
that promotes food and wine culture, encourages regional artisan produce and
defends biodiversity.
Paul’s career
background is in marketing and sales and he has an MBA in Business Strategy.
Corporate clients appreciate this mix of wine knowledge and business
understanding. Public courses at all levels are taught in Leeds and he also is a
WSET recommended tutor.
Whether talking
to corporate or public audiences, his informal style and infectious enthusiasm
ensures an enjoyable time for all participants regardless of whether they are
novice or expert. After all, wine is fun!
Paul judges at the International
Wines and Spirits Competition (IWSC) and the International Wine Challenge (IWC).
He also works as a freelance writer on wine and related topics. His website,
www.winealchemy.com was launched in
2005. |
