  1. The Champagne Academy celebrates 60 years

    Last night at a dinner at The Lanesborough Hotel in London, The Champagne Academy celebrated its 60th anniversary and launched the 2016 programme of its annual Champagne Academy Course trip to Champagne in June. As in all previous years, the 2016 trip will provide a unique and in-depth Champagne education experience, including lectures by the Principals and winemakers of Grande Marque Champagne Houses, visits to their vineyards, press houses, cellars and bottling plants, and an unrivalled range of tutored tastings. Alongside delivering unforgettable experiences, education is very much the focus of the course and candidates sit daily tests and a final exam, on successful completion of which they are awarded the prestigious Champagne Academy Diploma and invited to join The Champagne Academy. The Champagne Academy was established in 1956 in recognition of the UK and Ireland as key markets for Champagne, and to encourage the appreciation of Grandes Marques Champagnes within the wine trades in these countries. Its prime objective is to educate members of the trade who would not otherwise be able to study Champagne in depth. The organisation is a gathering of top flight Champagne Houses, co-operating in a unique way to put Grandes Marques Champagnes and the region first, before the interests of individual Houses. The 16 participating Houses are: Bollinger, Charles Heidsieck, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, Heidsieck Monopole, Krug, Lanson, Laurent Perrier, Moët & Chandon, GH Mumm & Co, Perrier-Jouët, Piper Heidsieck, Pommery, Pol Roger, Louis Roederer, Ruinart and Taittinger.   2. Exeter Festival of Food & Drink

    22 – 24th April 2016 The Festival is an annual event held in the courtyard of Exeter Castle and the surrounding Northernhay Gardens, right in the centre of Exeter. Taking place over three days, the Festival also includes two evening Festival After Dark Events featuring live music, wine tasting, chef demos and a great atmosphere. Now in its 13th year, the 2015 festival attracted around 20,000 visits, with people flocking to Exeter to indulge in top-notch South West food and drink, see national TV celebrities, to learn from the many cookery demonstrations and workshops and to enjoy family hands-on activities. 2016 promises even more!

    AWE is putting a team in for the Benevolent Quiz on 12th April to help raise funds for our trade charity. Last year we did very well coming in 2nd place, but, of course, winning is of no importance whatsoever, it’s the taking part and having fun which counts. Mostly.       Keith Grainger and Hazel Tattersall’s new book ‘Wine Production and Quality – 2nd Edition’ has just been published by Wiley.  The work is in hardback format, and also available as an e-book.  This comprehensive guide explores the techniques of wine production in the vineyard and winery, and considers their impact upon the taste, style and quality of wine in the bottle.  Part 1 of the book provides a structured, yet easily readable, understanding of wine production from vine to bottle.  The impact of natural factors, including climate and soil, is considered, together with the decisions made and work undertaken in the vineyard and winery.  Part 2 looks at quality in wines – the concepts and techniques of tasting are detailed, along with the challenges in recognising and assessing quality.  Also discussed are the steps producers may take, and the limitations they may face, in creating quality wines.  The book will prove valuable to beverage industry professionals, wine trade students, wine merchants, sommeliers, restaurateurs, and wine lovers as well as those entering (or thinking of entering) the highly competitive world of wine production.
